BLACK LIVES MATTER
What The Movement Is About & How We As South Africans Can Support It
What is BLM?
The Black Lives Matter Movement was started to highlight the disproportionate killing of black individuals by the US police force. The disproportionate killings are due to systemic racism and bias in the country.
How Does It Affect Us As South Africans?
The movement has filtered down to South Africa too, as our citizens feel that police brutality is a problem not only faced by Americans, but is becoming a prominent problem here at home as well.
How Can WE Support It? (How TSL is supporting)
DONATE - There are numerous platforms in which you can donate to the movement and help stop racism. Raising money is a powerful way to support the families of victims with legal fees and rebuild communities. Raise funds in order to donate to black communities that are struggling. Donate to black shelters and underprivileged schools. Give back to anyone that is in need :)
SIGN PETITIONS - Petitions with thousands of signatures are immensely powerful to demand changes from your local representatives.
SUPPORT - Support black-owned businesses just as much as you support white-owned businesses - we’re all in this together :)
SPEAK UP - If you witness ANY racial slander towards a peer, an acquaintance, a fellow human being of colour, SPEAK UP. Let’s not let prejudices against people, especially people of colour, go unnoticed.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” - Nelson Mandela
What Can We Do To Better Ourselves - Learn And Move Forward
There are books, podcasts, movies, articles, Google, YouTube videos and so much more.
Let’s educate ourselves and do right :)
“Seeking JUSTICE and EQUALITY is not a political thing. It is not a personal thing. It is not a temporary thing. It is, and perpetually should be, a HUMAN thing. If it is not a core value we share, we cease to be human”
